Tony Grams comes to America at the start of the 20th century, set on becoming a new man. Driven to leave poverty behind, he lands a job at the Ford Motor Company that puts him at the center of a daring social and economic experiment.

The new century and the new auto industry are bursting with promise, and everyone wants Henry Ford's Model T. But Ford needs men to make it. Better men. New men. Men tough enough and focused enough to handle the ever-bigger, ever-faster assembly line. Ford offers to double the standard wage for men who will be thrifty, sober, and dedicated... and who will let Ford investigators into their homes to confirm it.

Tony has just become one of those investigators. America and Ford have helped him build a new life, so at first he's eager to get to work. But world war, labor strife, and racial tension pit his increasingly powerful employer against its increasingly desperate enemies.

As Tony and his family come under threat from all sides and he faces losing everything he's built, he must struggle with his conscience and his weaknesses to protect the people he loves.

The New Men (Audible Audio Edition) Jon Enfield Meral Mathews Inc Wayzgoose Books

Imagine a world where one corporation or even one especially well-respected and followed businessman, can influence society down to the very choices that ordinary people made about who they married, where they lived and how they conducted their private lives. Okay, we live in that world. The New Men explores how we got there. You may know already about the miracle of the $5 a day wage that Henry Ford paid his workers, effectively building the middle class that sustained his company’s legacy for a century. What is less known is that Ford didn’t want to share his profits with gamblers, drinkers and layabouts so he built a sociological department that monitored the behavior and private lives of his workers, offering the higher wages to those immigrant workers who embraced Ford’s particular American Dream. In The New Men we follow Tony Grams, an Italian immigrant and Ford sociologist on his rounds through the immigrant community of World War I – era Detroit as he plays in role in Ford’s efforts to build America with his “foundry of men” and to remake the world. Along the way he finds love and heartbreak as old and new worlds collide. The New Men is vibrant, engrossing and ambitious (in a good way because it actually achieves its ambitions). Read this, it will stay with you.

The New Men (Audible Audio Edition) Jon Enfield Meral Mathews Inc Wayzgoose Books Reviews

Just finished the book last night. So good. The research was obviously deep and thorough, and the voices were really clear. I loved the last few chapters in particular, the way he brought the repeated imagery and other tropes together in a reflective monologue. Really stunning. I can't wait to read the next one!
I flew through The New Men, and learned a lot about the world on the way. This author masterfully weaves together history, relationships, comedy, tragedy, and romance to create a story that had me alternately laughing and crying... and always eager to find out what would happen next. A tremendous story that will be with me for many years to come.
Well researched and accurate to the times and events presented. I may be prejudiced, having grown up in Detroit and had a father who worked his way up the ladder at the Ford Motor Co., but I learned more of the inner workings of the company from the book than I did as a child living through it. It may tell you something about the company's stringent employee policies. though, that upon leaving the company, my father never bought another Ford.
I am already reading about some of the main historical figures who appeared in this novel. As is often the case I was unaware of many of the events in Detroit post ww1. As stated I found the book complex ,the event disturbing and the book thought provoking.
I awarded this book five stars because it's a jolly good read. I am a historian normally studying America in the period 1910 to1945. This book is a far better way for the casual reader to learn a little history and enjoy the time reading it. I only wish it was longer!
I liked it mainly because it gave a look into a little-known part of our history--the rise of Ford manufacturing and the early 20th century and the lives of immigrants who found work there. The characters were easy to remember because they were well-drawn and individualistic. None was portrayed as perfect and they had plenty of flaws, as do the rest of us. There was even the occasional injection of humor to lighten things up. In all, it was worth reading. I learned from it.
This is a story of the evolution of the Ford Motor Company and of the city of Detroit at the turn of the 20th century; it told of the integration of European and Negro immigrants and the struggle to acclimate them into the industrial era. It could have been a good book because of the story it was telling but the organization was poorly done; it was hard to follow the story. There was too much skipping around different sub themes. The language and words used may have been appropriate for that era it made the story hard to understand.
